Lourens du Plessis – Pro6Com – Pragmatic adoption of the IEC 61511 lifecycle
Presentation summary:
Many existing facilities are built and maintained to legacy standards that were developed during the previous century. Newer functional safety standards, such as the IEC 61511 specification, have subsequently been developed to keep current with the latest automation technologies, and particularly, the adoption of programmable devices in safety applications. The challenge for existing facilities relying on aging automated safety systems are to understand the need and full implications associated with the migration of these safety systems to the newer best practice norms. This presentation will therefore focus on the requirements of the IEC 61511 specification during the operations phase and how these best practices can systematically be adopted within existing facilities originally built to different design standards.
